The American actor, Johnny Depp, recently made headlines as he lost the libel case on Monday, against a British Tabloid called The Sun. The Sun published an article wherein they referred to Johnny Depp as a “wife-beater.” The libel’s stakes were very high, but fortunately or unfortunately, that is for you to decide, Johnny Depp lost the case in London’s court.
Johnny Depp is famously known for his role in Pirates of the Caribbean movie. The controversy raised after The Sun decided to publish an article about Johnny Depp and his unmanageable relationship with Amber Heard, his former spouse. Depp decided to summon New Group Newspapers, The Sun, and its executive editor, Dan Wooton. The article was published back in April 2018. The Sun published the headline, which read, “Gone Potty: How can JK Rowling be “genuinely happy” casting wife-beater Johnny Depp in the new Fantastic Beasts film?”
Johnny and Amber met almost a decade ago during the production of “The Rum Diary.” The movie is an adaptation of a famous novel written by Hunter S. Thompson. Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s’ marriage was full of complications and constantly ignited controversies. They both came into trials and passed several comments about each other’s behavior. Johnny Depp called Amber Heard a gold digger and a manipulative liar. Depp also expressed how she was the one who drank limitlessly and tried to frame him. Amber heard described certain disturbing incidents during their married time. Amber’s accusations were no less. She directly claimed that Johnny Depp would assault her continuously during their one year of marriage. They got married in 2015 and divorced in 2016. Within one year, Amber described 14 occasions during which he assaulted her. Surprisingly, to back this up, she had evidence for 12 of those occasions that the court accepted.
Depp was distraught with Amber’s claims of him being violent and beating her up. He has, in the past, accepted his excessive drug abuse and drinking habits. However, he has continuously denied any physical violent claims made by his former spouse, Amber Heard.
Depp has previously been engaged to Winona Ryder. She submitted witness statements to the court, denying any form of physical abuse to her when they were together. However, she also said that she describes her personal experience, and she does not know how his relationship with Amber was. Another one of Depp’s former partner was Vanessa Paradis. She is a French singer who admitted that there was no form of physical abuse; rather, she found all those allegations of physical abuse upsetting. She denied being put through any violent situation during their time together.
The Judge, Justice Nicol, found evidence that contributed to proving the claims of Amber Heard. Justice Nicol also said the allegations made by Johnny Depp by calling her a ‘gold-digger’ were baseless. This was after the court found evidence of Amber donating $7 million to charity. The high court trials went on for about 3 months before the decision was finally published. The Sun provided substantial evidence of calling Depp a “wife-beater” with the help of Amber Heard. They were thankful to Heard for showing courage and providing evidence.
