Atari is collaborating with Coinbase to bring classic games like Asteroids and Breakout to the blockchain. This partnership is part of the Onchain Summer celebration and the launch of the Onchain Arcade, where players can compete on leaderboards to earn rewards. Proceeds from minting these games will go directly to the creators who helped bring them to life, ensuring fair compensation for their work.
The collaboration aims to address issues with the current internet, such as arbitrary rules, censorship, digital theft, and high transaction fees that often impact creators negatively. Atari, Stack, Coinbase, and a group of creators have joined forces to introduce these classic games on the blockchain, creating a fairer and more transparent ecosystem.
Tyler Drewitz, director of Atari Club and Atari X, highlighted Coinbase’s extensive user base of over 100 million, which will help in engaging a larger audience.
Atari has a history with blockchain and cryptocurrency, initiated by former CEO Fred Chesnais. Although the company had paused many of its blockchain efforts after Chesnais’ departure, it resumed with new Web3 projects in 2022.
Drewitz emphasized that Atari is now actively involved in creating and partnering on innovative blockchain projects, aiming to provide unique experiences and rewards for those who engage with the brand.
The idea of rewarding community interaction is central to Atari’s vision, as seen with the revival of the Atari Club. This club is a modern take on its 1980s counterpart, aiming to build a community that rewards interaction in a fun and engaging manner.
The partnership with Onchain Summer is part of this vision, offering exclusive items and creating a vibrant community experience.
Through this collaboration, Atari and Coinbase ensure that creators receive fair compensation from game sales. This initiative is designed to give artists, developers, and other creators more control over their earnings.
The new Onchain Arcade allows players to enjoy classic Atari games, compete for rewards, and engage with the community in innovative ways. This effort underscores Atari’s commitment to innovation and community engagement, leveraging blockchain technology to enhance the gaming experience.
