There have been multiple rumors circulating about Apple developing a new home device that combines the functionality of an iPad, Apple TV, and HomePod.
A few months ago, clues pointing to a “HomeAccessory” were discovered in Apple’s backend code. Now, 9to5Mac has uncovered more information about this upcoming device.
What to Expect from Apple’s HomeAccessory Device
According to reliable sources familiar with the situation, the so-called “HomeAccessory” is indeed Apple’s new smart home gadget.
Internally codenamed J490, the device will be powered by the A18 chip, likely to enable Apple Intelligence features, which current HomePods do not support.
Interestingly, the HomeAccessory currently features a squarish display, differing from the rectangular format of an iPad.
It’s uncertain if this aspect ratio will remain in the final product. The device also has an integrated camera that supports FaceTime and other video conferencing apps.
Additionally, the device’s camera can recognize hand gestures from a distance, which could be particularly handy in settings like the kitchen.
It can also identify individual users in front of the device to enable Personal Requests, similar to how the HomePod can recognize different voices for personalized interactions.
Much like an Apple TV, the HomeAccessory can run apps and play media independently but also functions as an AirPlay receiver.
It will feature a customizable Lock Screen with multiple clock faces, much like those introduced with tvOS 18. In fact, 9to5Mac previously discovered a touchscreen-ready Lock Screen hidden in the tvOS beta.
Unclear Branding and Launch Timing
Whether Apple will brand this product as a “HomePod” or give it an entirely new name remains to be seen.
According to sources, Apple is currently aiming to release this device in the spring of 2025, though the timeline could still shift.
