Minecraft Support To End For The VR/MR Devices Stopping Further Updates

For Minecraft players, the days of virtual and mixed reality are nearing an end, much like the familiar sound of a hissing creeper.

Mojang, the game’s developer, announced last month that March 2025 will mark the final update for Minecraft on PlayStation VR.

Similarly, yesterday’s patch notes for the Bedrock edition stated that “our ability to support VR/MR devices has come to an end, and will no longer be supported in updates after March of 2025.”

However, fans of building in virtual reality aren’t entirely out of luck. After the final update in March 2025, the patch notes confirm that players can “keep building in your worlds, and your Marketplace purchases (including Minecoins) will remain accessible on non-VR/MR devices such as a computer monitor.”

While this is disappointing news for a game that seemed so well-suited to the VR experience, especially given Minecraft’s continued success, it’s also a discouraging development for the wider virtual and mixed reality space to lose such an iconic title.

There is a silver lining for the Minecraft community, though. After a long wait, the game finally has a native version for the PlayStation 5.

Until now, PS5 users have been restricted to playing the PS4 version, but moving forward, the game will support 4K resolution at 60 fps, even with extended draw distances.

PS5 owners who already have the PS4 version can claim this upgrade for free through the PlayStation Store.

With the new Bundles of Bravery update rolling out as of yesterday, it’s an exciting time to dive back into Minecraft and start a fresh, block-filled adventure.
