Anime publisher and FromSoftware parent company Kadokawa Corporation has expressed readiness for a potential acquisition by Sony, should the latter decide to purchase the company outright.
However, Sony remains cautious about expanding its portfolio with anime and video game-related assets.
A recent report reveals that discussions about the acquisition have been ongoing for several years, with the main point of contention being the “degree of commitment.”
Despite the delays, negotiations have now progressed to a formal stage, a development described as “very encouraging”. Both Sony and Kadokawa appear increasingly open to finalizing a deal.
Kadokawa Corporation is a prominent name in the media industry, boasting a library of over 100,000 anime, science fiction novels, and comics. It also holds stakes in game development studios, including FromSoftware, the creator of Elden Ring.
Recently, Kadokawa confirmed that it has 26 titles in development, comprising 20 console games and six mobile games.
Among these, some projects have already been announced, such as Action Game Maker, a title in development by Kadokawa subsidiary Gotcha Gotcha Games, which is slated for a 2025 release.
If Sony were to acquire Kadokawa, it would significantly strengthen its position in the anime industry.
Additionally, Sony could go through opportunities to create cinematic or video game adaptations of Kadokawa’s extensive fantasy universes, broadening its reach to new audiences.
Kadokawa CEO Takeshi Natsuno recently addressed the situation, stating, “The company has received an initial letter of intent [from Sony] to acquire the company’s shares, but no decision has been made at this time.”
