Apple’s Foldable iPad, A Slim 20-inch Device With Solid Performance

Apple is reportedly aiming to debut a foldable 18.8-inch iPad by 2028, according to Mark Gurman.

The company’s industrial design team has developed prototypes of the device that feature what Gurman describes as a “nearly invisible crease,” likening it to “two iPad Pros placed side-by-side.”

Speculation about a foldable iPad has circulated for years, with recent rumors suggesting that Apple could release a smaller foldable model in 2026 or 2027.

Gurman’s update echoes details from his 2022 report about a massive 20-inch foldable “iPad/MacBook hybrid.”

While this doesn’t indicate the device would run macOS, Gurman suggests it will combine features of both Macs and iPads.

He also speculates that iPadOS could advance enough by 2028 to support macOS applications.

Apple’s Potential Foldable Device

Given that Macs can already run iPhone and iPad apps, it’s reasonable to imagine Apple paving the way for compatibility in the other direction.

This potential functionality might also bolster the appeal of such a device. For instance, the current 13-inch iPad Pro starts at $1,299; an iPad twice that size would likely carry an even steeper price tag. The ability to run macOS apps could help justify the cost for prospective buyers.

Gurman also notes that Apple continues to develop a foldable iPhone, but he doesn’t anticipate its release before 2026 at the earliest, aligning with other recent rumors.

Furthermore, he indicates that his sources corroborate details from a purported internal Apple display roadmap.

This roadmap outlines plans for the 18.8-inch foldable iPad and hints at additional releases, including OLED MacBook Pros in 2026 and an OLED MacBook Air update in 2027.
