Ledger Set to Launch iPod-Inspired Crypto Wallet in May Following Months of Delays

Crypto wallet manufacturer Ledger has announced the imminent release of its highly anticipated hardware wallet, Ledger Stax, slated to debut in May.

Conceived by Tony Fadell, the innovator behind the iPod, Ledger Stax was initially disclosed in 2022 amid a downturn in crypto markets following the collapse of the FTX exchange.

Ledger Stax is like a credit card and has a screen like a Kindle. You can use it to check your cryptocurrency. It’s small and easy to carry around.

Pascal Gauthier, the CEO of Ledger, announced at the Blockworks Digital Asset Summit in London that their new product, Stax, is almost ready for release. He mentioned, “Stax is coming out in two months. We finally got it right, and it’ll be available very soon.”

Despite encountering setbacks, including shipment delays and production hurdles attributed to the E-ink display, Gauthier affirmed the company’s commitment to overcoming these challenges.

Notably, the incorporation of an E-ink display proved particularly intricate, with efforts focused on achieving a seamless wraparound feature.

Available for preorders since late 2022 at $279, Ledger Stax resembles a compact smartphone or credit card reader, measuring 85 millimeters in length and 54 millimeters in width, and weighing approximately 45 grams—lighter than an iPhone.

It supports the storage and exchange of various tokens, including Bitcoin, ether, Cardano, Solana, and nonfungible tokens (NFTs).

Featuring magnetic capabilities, multiple Ledger Stax devices can be stacked atop one another, akin to a stack of books or cash, thus earning its moniker, Stax. Connection options include USB cable for laptops and Bluetooth for smartphones.

Gauthier emphasized Ledger’s commitment to user-friendly design, recognizing that self-custody and ownership may not suit all users.

Despite challenges, Ledger has cultivated a robust supplier ecosystem to ensure a timely launch. Fadell’s unwavering support for the project has also been instrumental in sustaining momentum toward the Ledger Stax’s realization.
