Apple is developing a new smart home doorbell aimed at competing with companies like Ring. This doorbell would feature “advanced facial recognition” and wirelessly integrate with smart home locks.
While Apple already sells various third-party HomeKit locks through its online store, a doorbell incorporating facial recognition would represent a new area of innovation. Gurman reports that the doorbell could automatically unlock your home by recognizing your face, similar to how Face ID grants access to your iPhone:
The concept is that the doorbell could unlock the door for residents simply by scanning their face, just as Face ID allows access to their iPhone.
Although it’s unclear, the doorbell may be compatible with many third-party HomeKit locks, but Apple might opt to collaborate with a specific lock manufacturer, offering a complete package with a single purchase.
This smart home doorbell is still in its early stages and is unlikely to be released before the end of next year, as per the report. It will also make use of Apple’s new in-house networking chip.
Apple is expected to broaden its presence in the smart home sector next year, launching a new smart home control device that could be mounted on your walls, possibly featuring a speaker base. This device is similar to the Google Nest Hub.
Additionally, Apple plans to release refreshed versions of the Apple TV and HomePod mini as part of these efforts.
Gurman also suggests that Apple may decide to release the doorbell under its own brand due to concerns over potential associations with break-ins or thefts. If this happens, the technology could be offered under a close partner, such as Belkin.
