Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has called upon men and boys across the nation to take a stand against the pervasive issue of violence against women.
Speaking on Tuesday, Albanese emphasized the need for collective action to address the root causes of such violence, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
His remarks came in the wake of a tragic incident where a 29-year-old man, previously out on bail, was charged with the murder of a 28-year-old woman in New South Wales.
This case adds to a disturbing trend highlighted by activist group Counting Dead Women, which reported 25 instances of women dying violently in Australia in 2024, including the recent Sydney shopping center stabbing spree that claimed five lives in April.
Albanese expressed deep concern over the frequency of such incidents, labeling violence against women as a scourge that demands urgent attention.
In an interview with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) radio, he stressed the importance of fostering open dialogue among men and boys about respecting women.
While Albanese stopped short of declaring violence against women a national emergency, he acknowledged that the government has long recognized the crisis and has taken steps to address it.
These efforts include allocating additional funding to establish safe spaces for women in need.
The Prime Minister’s call for action underscores the gravity of the situation and the collective responsibility to create a safer society for women across Australia.
