OpenAI has revealed a new way to access its popular AI chatbot, ChatGPT, via a free phone service in the United States and global integration with WhatsApp.
This feature, introduced as part of OpenAI’s “12 Days of Christmas” updates, aims to make engaging with AI technology simpler and more accessible.
Accessing ChatGPT by Phone in the US
In the United States, users can now call ChatGPT by dialing 1-800-CHATGPT. This service is entirely free, though usage is capped at 15 minutes of call time per phone number each month.
WhatsApp Integration for Global Users
For international users, OpenAI has integrated ChatGPT with WhatsApp. By messaging the chatbot through 1-800-242-8478, people worldwide can easily interact with the AI.
“This is a stepping stone for AI newcomers, designed to provide a user-friendly experience,” OpenAI’s Chief Product Officer Kevin Weil said during a livestream event.
How It Works
The phone service leverages OpenAI’s Realtime API, while the WhatsApp integration is powered by GPT-4o mini through the WhatsApp API. These features are designed to be low-cost and accessible, especially for those unfamiliar with OpenAI’s web-based ChatGPT platform.
Simplified AI Access for Newcomers
Both the phone and WhatsApp integrations serve as entry-level tools to explore ChatGPT, offering a more streamlined experience compared to the full functionality available on OpenAI’s main platform.
OpenAI emphasized that these versions are experimental but cater to less tech-savvy users who may find traditional platforms daunting.
Existing users who require advanced features, greater personalization, or higher usage limits are encouraged to continue using the standard web-based ChatGPT.
Strategic Goals and Historical Parallels
OpenAI’s initiative underscores its mission to make AI technology more accessible to diverse audiences. WhatsApp, with over two billion active users globally, was selected for its widespread adoption and familiarity.
This project echoes Google’s 2007 GOOG-411, a voice-based directory assistance service used to collect voice samples for speech recognition before its discontinuation in 2010. While OpenAI’s execution and goals differ, it similarly seeks to bridge the gap between cutting-edge technology and everyday users.
Privacy and Data Use
Addressing potential concerns, OpenAI spokesperson Taya Christianson clarified that data from calls would not be used to train large language models.
Broader Strategy and Additional Updates
The announcement reflects OpenAI’s broader strategy to bring ChatGPT to a wider audience while managing operational costs associated with its advanced AI models. Developed during a “hack week” in just a few weeks, the initiative marks a significant milestone in making AI tools more approachable.
Other December updates include a new AI text-to-video generator named Sora and a premium subscription tier that provides access to OpenAI’s most powerful models for $200 per month.
Future Plans
Though experimental, the phone and WhatsApp features may evolve based on user demand. Currently, the phone service is exclusive to US users, while WhatsApp access is available globally. OpenAI plans to monitor usage and adapt its offerings accordingly.
