Google is working to integrate its Gemini AI chatbot into as many productivity tools as possible. The most recent app to receive a boost from this generative AI is the Files by Google app, which now automatically displays Gemini’s analysis when you open a PDF document.
This feature, initially shared with the r/Android Reddit community, is now available on phones running Android 15. It was tested on a Pixel 9 running the stable version of Android 15, along with the latest update of Google’s file manager app.
When users open a PDF document in the Files app and activate Gemini—either by using a screen gesture or the power button shortcut—the chat overlay will display an “Ask about this PDF” chip message above it.
Tapping on this chip integrates the PDF into the chatbot, preparing it for processing by the AI model. After this, users can simply type in their relevant query, and Gemini will provide a response in natural language after analyzing the document.
This is one of the most thoughtful applications of Gemini, as it eliminates the need for users to import PDF files into other standalone AI apps, including the Gemini mobile app.
If this feature isn’t yet available in the Files app, users can still achieve a similar result by using the Gemini mobile app. To do this, they can open the app, tap the Plus sign icon in the Ask Gemini chat bubble, and attach the desired PDF file.
Users can select a PDF from local storage or even retrieve one from Google Drive. Thanks to Gemini’s multi-modal capabilities, the AI chatbot can also access and analyze media files from the device’s gallery.
However, there is a limitation. The Gemini-powered PDF analysis feature is only available on devices running Android 15 and for Google accounts with Gemini Advanced access.
For those who don’t want to pay for Gemini Advanced, there is an alternative: NotebookLM, a free AI tool from Google. This app can parse information from files, URLs, and even YouTube videos, offering a similar level of convenience without the payment requirement.
