iOS 18 was launched worldwide on September 16, bringing a host of updates and features for compatible iPhone devices.
However, some users have encountered unexpected problems following the release.
A notable issue revolves around a significant display downgrade, with reports indicating that iPhones, especially the iPhone 16 Pro models, are operating at an 80Hz refresh rate instead of the advertised 120Hz.
This adjustment seems to have been intentionally implemented by Apple to enhance battery life, leading to user frustration.
The refresh rate issue was first highlighted by prominent tipster Ice Universe on X (formerly Twitter), drawing attention to the reduced display performance.
A TikTok video also surfaced, showcasing the refresh rate counter dropping to 80Hz rather than the expected 120Hz on Pro models.
This situation has disappointed users who anticipated smooth animations and quick response times, especially given the premium cost of their devices.
As Ice Universe remarked, “The animation of iOS 18 is still elegant, but it is not smooth. Anyone can feel that iOS 18 still limits the refresh rate of most scenes to 80Hz.”
Reports suggest that Apple made this change deliberately to prolong battery life in devices running iOS 18.
While the company has not officially confirmed these claims, the trade-off between refresh rate and battery efficiency has ignited discussion among users.
Many believe they should have the flexibility to choose their desired refresh rate, a feature available on several Android smartphones.
A higher refresh rate, like 120Hz, typically provides quicker response times and a smoother user experience, which is why the unverified change has left many users dissatisfied.
Though these concerns are primarily based on tips and unverified reports, Apple has yet to issue an official statement regarding the refresh rate downgrade.
In the meantime, users are advised to be cautious about this issue, with some reconsidering the iPhone 16 Pro Max as their main device.
