BEIJING — Xiaomi, the Chinese smartphone giant, made a significant announcement on Tuesday, declaring the formal launch of its much-anticipated electric car scheduled for March 28.
In a social media post, the company assured that its SU7 electric car “would be delivered as soon as it is launched,” as per CNBC’s translation of the post in Chinese.
Moreover, Xiaomi disclosed its plan to open the waitlist for 59 stores spread across 29 cities in China.
Though the exterior design and technological features of the vehicle were unveiled in late December, the company refrained from revealing the pricing details or a specific delivery date.
In a recent statement, Xiaomi President Weibing Lu informed CNBC about the company’s strategy to target the premium segment with the new electric vehicle.
He hinted at the possibility of deliveries commencing as early as the second quarter.
Although Xiaomi presented the car to an international audience for the first time at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Lu indicated that it might take at least another two or three years before the company initiates sales of the vehicle overseas.
