In response to the overturning of Harvey Weinstein‘s 2020 rape conviction in New York, MeToo founder Tarana Burke issued a resolute statement, declaring, “This is not a blow to the movement. It is a clarion call, and we are prepared to answer that call.”
The decision came after the New York Court of Appeals ruled that Weinstein had not received a fair trial due to the inclusion of witnesses whose accusations were not part of the charges against him, necessitating a new trial.
Weinstein’s lawyer, Arthur Aidala, lauded the decision as a “victory for every criminal defendant in the state of New York,” asserting that fair application of the law is paramount, regardless of a defendant’s societal standing.
