Nissan is currently engaged in advanced discussions to invest in electric vehicle manufacturer Fisker, as per two individuals familiar with the negotiations. This potential deal could offer the Japanese automaker access to an electric pickup truck, while simultaneously providing a much-needed financial boost to the struggling startup.
The sources, requesting anonymity due to the ongoing and unconfirmed nature of the talks, revealed that the deal may reach fruition as early as this month. Among the terms under deliberation is Nissan’s proposed investment of over $400 million into Fisker’s truck platform.
Additionally, there are discussions about Nissan commencing production of Fisker’s planned Alaska pickup from 2026 onwards at one of its U.S. assembly plants. It’s noted that Nissan would also utilize the same platform for its electric pickup. Notably, Nissan currently operates U.S. assembly plants in Mississippi and Tennessee.
This development follows Fisker’s recent announcement on Thursday, wherein the company hinted at potential financial instability, expressing uncertainty about its continuity and disclosing plans to reduce its workforce by 15%.
Concurrently, Fisker acknowledged ongoing discussions with a major automaker regarding a potential investment and collaborative development partnership, although it refrained from divulging the identity of the said automaker.
While a spokesman for Fisker declined to comment on speculative matters, officials from Nissan were not immediately reachable for comment.
As of Friday, Fisker shares experienced a significant decline of more than 43%, resulting in a market capitalization for the company of approximately $222 million.
