Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) — the business analytics software company turned de-facto Bitcoin holding vehicle — now controls approximately 526,000 BTC, worth over $33 billion at $63,000 per coin. That’s 2.4% of the maximum 21 million Bitcoin supply that will ever exist. No corporate entity in history has held this concentration of a single commodity asset relative to its total supply.
How Strategy Accumulates: The At-the-Market Playbook
Strategy uses a combination of convertible note offerings and at-the-market (ATM) equity issuance to raise capital for Bitcoin purchases. The mechanic: issue stock at a premium to Bitcoin NAV, use proceeds to buy more Bitcoin, which increases NAV, which justifies continued issuance. The flywheel works as long as:
- MSTR trades at a premium to its Bitcoin NAV (it currently does, at ~1.6× NAV)
- Bitcoin price remains above Strategy’s average purchase cost (~$36,800)
- Debt maturities don’t force selling into a bear market
The NAV Premium: Why Anyone Buys MSTR Over IBIT
MSTR trades at a persistent premium to spot Bitcoin ETFs like IBIT. The thesis for holding MSTR instead of an ETF: (1) MSTR has equity upside beyond its BTC holdings via the software business; (2) accretive dilution in the ATM model can increase BTC-per-share over time; (3) MSTR is eligible for inclusion in equity indices and can be held in accounts that can’t access ETFs.
“Strategy convinced Wall Street to give it a free call option on Bitcoin using their own capital.” — widely cited analysis in r/Bitcoin discussion on Strategy mechanics
Concentration Risk: What a 50% BTC Drawdown Means
At $31,500 BTC (50% from current price), Strategy’s Bitcoin holdings fall to ~$16.5B while its debt obligations remain nominally fixed. The company holds approximately $8.2B in convertible notes with various maturity dates through 2030. A sustained bear market doesn’t necessarily force liquidation — as long as Strategy can service interest and maturity schedules without selling BTC. Bond markets will have their own opinion on that at maturity.
Who Is Copying the Playbook?
The Strategy template has been replicated by dozens of smaller companies: Metaplanet (Japan), Twenty One Capital, and multiple micro-cap vehicles. At last count, publicly traded companies hold approximately 780,000 BTC collectively. The r/Bitcoin corporate treasury thread maintains a running list.
